Fin du voyage en Inde : Mamallapuram


A quelques kilomètres de la vibrante Chennai, Mamallapuram , paisible petit village de pécheurs de l’Inde du Sud , c’est un peu les portes du Tamil Nadu qui s’ouvrent.

Mamallapuram est une petite ville balnéaire de 12,500 habitants qui se situe entre Chennai et Pondicherry.

Grâce à ses merveilles archéologiques, ce site est classé au patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco. On y retrouve plusieurs temples construits vers les années 600.

Parmi eux, les Five Rathas, un ensemble de 5 temples sculptés dans la roche, entourés de sable (la plage n’est pas loin) , en forme de chariots dédiés à Shiva, Vishnu, Durga et Indra.

Et en bord de mer, le temple du rivage qui a résisté au tsunami et bien que ses sculptures soient un peu érodées, ce temple semble défier le temps.

Ces monuments sont à visiter au petit matin pour éviter la foule de touristes indiens qui arrivent à partir du milieu de la matinée…

Mamallapuram cultive une longue tradition de sculpteurs qui travaillent toujours au marteau et au burin, sans outillage électrique et les jeunes sculpteurs sont formés au collège local.

Au sud du village, dans le quartier des sculpteurs, les artisans travaillent la pierre pour en faire naître de petits objets ou des dieux et déesses immenses qui seront ensuite exportés vers les temples hindous et les jardins du monde.

Cette visite aura été le dernier moment partagé avec la famille indienne qui m’accueillait, une petite journée chaleureuse juste avant de reprendre l’avion , une journée dans un petit village tranquille en bord de mer avec une partie des enfants que j’aurais rencontré durant mon séjour , une journée qui symbolisera mon séjour en Inde.
